As soon as a person sets a goal, three things emerge that usually stop them from achieving it.
You need to be aware of these three things without letting them stop you. They are simply a part of the process of becoming the best version of yourself. Treat them for what they are – things to handle.
Let’s say you want to double your income next year. As soon as you decide it’s something you want to do, considerations will pop into your head.
“Hmm, I don't know. I’ll have to work twice as hard.”
“I won’t have time for my family.”
“My wife/husband is going to kill me.”
These thoughts are called considerations – reasons why you shouldn’t even try because your mind is telling you it's impossible. Remember, your brain doesn't want you to push yourself too hard. It likes the way things are.
So acknowledging these thoughts is a good thing. That's half the battle. They subconsciously stop you from becoming the best man you can be. But by bringing them into your conscious awareness, you can face and move past them.
Fears aren’t thoughts, but feelings. Many people experience the fear of rejection, fear of failure, or fear of embarrassment. Or you might be afraid of getting physically or emotionally hurt, or losing all your savings.
Realize that these fears are normal. They are part of the process. Successful people feel the fear and do what they need to do anyway.
Roadblocks are external conditions rather than thoughts and feelings.
Maybe you don’t have enough money to start your own business. Maybe no one wants to support you and invest in your ideas.
These are obstacles the world throws at you. But you can’t let them stop you. You need to deal with them in order to move forward.
Obstacles separate the good from the great. Persistence is key. Find a way around them and keep going.
Unfortunately, most people see considerations, fears and roadblocks as stop signs. They completely give up on pursuing their goal. But don’t see them as stop signs, but rather as normal parts of the journey. Learn to deal with them.
If you don't have to face them, it might mean you haven’t set big enough goals that challenge you and force you to grow.
So I try to accept considerations, fears and roadblocks. They are often the things that are holding me back in my life. Once I’m aware of them, I can do something about it.
